- A Muslim student has lost a legal challenge against a school previously dubbed Britain's strictest over its ban on "prayer rituals". One-third of schools in England are faith-based, which got us thinking whether all schools should be secular spaces? Coleen thinks the ruling is a good thing and parents should select a faith school if that’s an important aspect to them. Meanwhile, Judi worries what the segregation of faith-based versus secular students could do to our wider society, and reveals the importance of religious influences in her life.

Imagine feeling awkward if someone is quietly praying for five mins during their lunch break.
This exactly! Imagine talking about accepting everyone and then saying not have “that” in between them. Religion is also part of their identity!
@@sabzp89 Well they should find a religious school to accommodate that. This one said no.
@@TheAArmstrongbut not everyone practises as strictly as a say a religious school. People are entitled to practice their faith how they wish, how does it bother you or anyone else in any way?!
@@TheAArmstronghow do you say u live in a society that is accepting of all people if u can’t accept how all people are?? It’s like saying gay people should go to a school for gay people, trans people for trans people, Christian’s in there own etc etc if we’re talking about acceptance of all people it should be across the board!
They weren’t “quietly” praying. The pupils were EN MASSE chanting to Allah in the school playground making others uncomfortable and ruining PLAYTIME.
Then leave the independent faith schools alone and don't try to force them to become more secular so that non religious people who choose to go there aren’t uncomfortable
I went to a secular Primary school and Christian songs were a part of every assembly. So I think its hypocritical to not allow a room for people to pray if they want to
It’s not about faith specific or faith free schools. It’s just being accepting of those that want to pray if they need to. No ones asking for curriculum to be changed. What’s the harm for someone wanting to pray on their lunch break. That’s the only prayer that falls within school time.
Give me a break. People are always calling for tolerance. However, they're never tolerate for the person that's practicing their faith. How is 5 mins of prayer hurting anyone?
If you're going to have faith-free schools, then you can't have, or would have to rename, Christmas and Easter holidays. Christmas and Easter are Christian holidays. Just my opinion though, no hate to anyone.
I guess the only problem with that is a large portion of people who now celebrate those holidays aren't religious.
Most people that celebrate Christmas aren't even religious anyway. It is just a fun time of year for them to get involved in.
Actually if you want to be technical they are not Christian holidays. They were adopted by Christians but were actually pagan holidays.
@@beepboop9464 Exactly because Christmas in particular has been commercialized for almost a century now. Easter use to be deemed quite religious when I was a kid but lately it is becoming commercialized too.
the easter bunny originally a hare 1st used in Germany 1682 is actually a pagan symbol of fertility pre-Christ
I don’t see how a child taking 5 minutes to independently pray during lunch break is imposing their religion on others. We all have different customs. If someone wants to pray by themselves, I don’t see how that affects anyone else.
My secondary school never had a prayer room.... never heard anyone of any religion complaining about it
Because you didn’t know they were praying in classrooms and under stair cases
I am so thankful the school my son will go to has a prayer room. We are Muslim and prayer is important to us. Is also great way to relax and almost meditation like. Has so much benefits. Doesn’t hurt anyone for a child to pray. How does that impact someone else.
How is it forcing or making school about religion by peacefully going off and praying alone for a couple of minutes. How sad and pathetic
That’s not what happened lol
Yes absolutely, they should not force religion on you in any way. Wether you are christian, muslim or dont have a religion schools should welcome pupils who have different faiths
You can apply to these specific schools no matter what faith you have, i know plenty of Athiests that chose to go to a Christian schools when there were others around. The point is that as long as there are plenty of schools that aren't religious too, then it's okay, parent's need to have a choice.
@@aurora6920 thats basically what i said but worded differently
How does praying during your lunch break for 5 mins harm anyone..? Schools need more of God not less..
Schools need more god?? No way. Nobody needs god but people should have the right to pray without shoving down others throats.
So are banning religious songs in assemblies, Christmas, nativity plays and Easter?
Are we going to get rid of catchment areas then so kids are not forced to go to a local school that does not respect their religion practices
I was brought up as Jehovah’s Witness. I was so confused when I was at school as everyone celebrated Christmas, birthdays etc. I can seriously say that I now have no faith and I will not have any faith ever. It completely destroyed my childhood.
i wonder if their answer would be the same if the prayer ban is imposed on christians.
It is lol. No religion is practiced at that school.
I worry about certain people who think that their religion is the right and only one. These individuals start influencing and preaching to others about it.
Schools can be a ripe ground for conversion particularly if your child is vulnerable and going through an emotional time…
I saw this happen in my sixth form sadly…
I'm not religious but all schools need is a prayer room that is open to any religion and kindly ask the children to use it. Most of them will use it because they don't want to be disturbed while praying. This isn't a big deal. Let them pray.
I agree and I hate religion. A school can't be called inclusive and then decide what they are going to include, that doesn't make sense.
Stopping prayers , whats next, is this so called great headteacher gonna ban students from fasting wearing hijabs , that’s all part of faith , doesn’t make sense like I said …..
Shouldn’t force any religion on anyone. If people want to pray and believe in a religion that’s their choice but no one should preach religion to anyone. I went to a Christian school (obviously not my choice) and every day in assembly, we were forced to pray.
Why not have religion as an option in all schools for child wanting to learn about religion and teach about every religion not just one faith, more knowledge would lead to more acceptance and inclusion to all as been raised catholic i would love to know and understand other religious beliefs
Schools teach religious studies more now than ever. What is she talking about?
It’s not a choice in this country what school you go to because we’re subject to catchment areas unless parent can afford private schools
It's absolutely not complicated. Schools are there to teach the curriculum. Leave religion at the gates. There is nothing to stop you praying silently in your head. If you are that big into your religion, perhaps live in a country of that particular faith, that way you will be accommodated 🤷🏻♀️
I would be wuite happy if religion just died out. But people should be allowed to pray in privacy and safety. The school is inclusive... Yet wint allow a child to pray for 5 minutes at lunch. Far too controlling.
What a bizarre segment of the show. You’ve downplayed what this is about. There were pupils en masse praying in the school playground their Allah stuff chanting, and the school told them not to. There were then death threats by the peaceful followers of said religion and abuse against them, where police had to be involved. This is about that, not quiet PERSONAL praying.
I'm sure they could have provided her with a little room to be able to pray, I don't see the problem
Mmmmmm…. Sort of two topics here, faith based schools not I don’t think should exist as they create sub communities etc. However a general religious studies lesson, exploring all major world religions i think is good. On the subject of a student privately praying during their free time, certainly I think should be allowed, it’s freedom. If someone else is feel uncomfortable seeing someone else pray, I suggest they don’t join in and continue on with their day
Are these trick questions? The obvious answer is yes. Duh
Free country but they afraid of child praying for 5 mins 😂
Keep schools British and Christian. If children don't want to be included so be it. But leave the British way of schooling alone, really what other countries would put up with this.
Who needs a prayer room?
If you want to pray, close your eyes, and prayer
No room needed
Jews, Muslims etc. not everyone prays the same way.
Go look into it Muslims prayer isn’t in your head it’s a physical and cleansing act to perform so a room would be needed or preferably but Muslims can prayer anyway no room required
With other children talking loudly, laughing and walking across their prayer mat???
Communism has entered the chat
religion and education should be separate school is for learning end of learn about all faiths but not outside of RE
You said it learning and seeing those practices is learning education, again it’s schools picking and choosing if they allow you to fast why not prayers or are they going to stop Muslims fasting or wearing hijabs etc
AFAIK most schools in the UK don't have RE anymore.
I think schools should hire astrologers
It's not at the centre of war greed is. Sick of hearing the silly phrase.
Shouldn’t force religion but shouldn’t force people not to practice their religion.. give them a room for 5 mins over lunch that they can go to and they wouldn’t have to pray in the playground
I love faith schools 🏫 ❤
Religion in churches and homes only.
No way. I love faith based schools. I went to a Catholic school and i loved it
Got touched up did ya yea?
